This past weekend we went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take a weekend workshop with Growing Power.

Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization and land trust started by Will Allen. It supports people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on -the-ground demonstrations, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner. You can also read more at their BLOG.

We learned how to use solar power to generate energy for the farms, how to develop a closed loop organic growing system that employs aquaponics and vermicomposting, how to make goat cheese, honey, and a myriad of other projects that go into running an organic healthy farm.

This year, Will Allen was chosen as one of Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People.

Oh, apparently they were filming for ABC News while we were there.

Here’s a link to all my photos.

And here‘s another local news story that covers some of what he’s doing.
